TJ Doyle: On The Horizon

His imagination’s life blood is built of trees, blades of grass, the song of the nearest sparrow, the chirp of a cricket, and the rush of a field mouse. TJ Doyle is at peace in his surroundings, nature being the heartbeat behind his song. In addition to a natural setting, his influences stem from speaking the mind of his generation in a colloquial manner with no bunkum in tow. In his new album On The Horizon, his song writing is seamless, his voice is classic, timeless, modern, smooth, and rough, soft and real, and just undefinable. His connection with nature helps him listen, watch, wait, and breath peace, which transposes onto his score. The sonic transitions are as fluid as a river floating on clay bedrock, pulling up bits of rock along the way, with all the rushes of the great whites to the calm down the way. There is something for everyone in On The Horizon. Classic Rock fans, Indie hipsters, and even the melodramatic folk supporter will find a connection. TJ Doyle brings the the poet’s voice from the 60’s to the modern era. He absorbs our longing, our pain, and our intrigue and lays it bare, and in doing so show’s us that we are all connected, just as the field meets the sky On The Horizon.

Whiskey N’ Rye: Sick Soul Summertime

Set to release this summer, Sick Soul Summertime, is the new album by Whiskey N’ Rye a gritty Rock band birthed out of the rainy city of Seattle. Whiskey N’ Rye’s meteoric rise began in 2013 with their first album and hard rocking live shows around some of the countries best venues and festivals. The five piece with members, Philip Lindholm, Guitar, singer/songwriter and producer, Carson Dent on drums, Marco Longo on Keyboards, Greg Pascale on lead guitar, and Alex Atwood on Bass. The album Sick Soul Summertime is Americana, Blues, and Rock based full of down home grit and guitars with an urban twist of trumpets and soul back up vocals. Southern Slanted fiddles and harmonicas make an appearance as well. Lindholm’s vocals are throaty and of a light-hearted crooner feel with power and depth. The whole album feels like a bunch of musicians met at a truck stop and had a giant jam fest together. There is a bit of everything for people to enjoy without sounding overtly complicated or too thought out. The album is perfect for summer fun and rocking out too while having grand sun filled adventures. Check it out on their website for pre-order. Whiskey N’ Rye, the future of Americana and Rock.

Sima is an up and coming superstar that has performed and been passionate about music since a young age. She produces and writes all of her music. Some of her biggest influences include Pearl Jam, Pink Floyd, and The Cure. There is a bit of her influences present in her music but it also has a unique flair all its own. In the track “Beautiful Liar” there is a clear 80’s pop rock edge throughout but has a new perspective to the genres. Her voice has an original take on many female pop greats including Madonna, and has no trouble standing on her own when compared to such talent. Distorted guitars, synths, and perfectly placed breakdowns all lift up Sima’s solid vocals and harmonies. It is clear she is not only a performer but has much talent when it comes to production, arranging, and the like. Her music evolves not only through a series of songs but in just one single track. “Beautiful liar” has an evolution that picks up, drops off, builds, plummets, and then crescendos into a distorted whisper. It’s not just your basic, verse chorus, bridge, it has a story through song that begs you to listen to the end. You can listen and find her on all the links below.

Dream Cloud Machine

cloud machine

-Angel Russell

The self titled album by Dream Cloud Machine released on November eleventh of 2014 is a collection of songs created by people who met on the internet. Jack Allen of Pasedena, Los Angeles produced the album. The album has the same upbeat melodies and instrumentation as 70’s pop hit maker Emitt Rhodes (The One Man Beatles). The best song on the album, “Close Me Down”, has delightful instrumentation of piano, guitar, solid drums, and direct melodies that add pep to your step. Also on the eight song album are songs such as “The Sequel” with vocal harmonies evocative of Wilco and Weezer, “The Vestal Ones” (another favorite) has more of a dark indie pop rock feel, vibrant guitar solos and lucid vocal harmonies. “Stray” brings the album around to a more melancholy tone. Overall the album is a strong set of well written, well-played songs  you’ll want to hear more than once. The songs stream together into a cohesive work well worth a listen. If you’re a fan of up beat pop rock, and lighthearted indie rock, you’re sure to like Dream Cloud Machine.

Sonnet to Sleep

Sonnet to Sleep is a band dedicated to beautiful melodies, indie rock and shoegaze style, and honest songwriting. It is the creation of indie artist Aaron Rios. “Affirmative Say Nothing” is a sophomore follow up to his 2009 release. The album has Aaron’s signature vocals that have perfect tone, emotion, and a raw guttural feel. His voice could be compared to David Grohl or even a Broadway male lead. The arrangements that back him up have passion and drive. The guitars are distorted and melancholy. The drums are powerful and intense. Sonnet to Sleep has a unique sound that pulls on many influences. The themes and melodies are sorrowful with a rock edge that keeps the songs moving forward. The album proceeds go to support a good cause; Arms Around the World. Listen and support below:

New Alternative Rock: The Hubs

The Hubs are soon to release a new EP called “Welcome to Beyond”. The Hubs are a four piece Alternative Rock band from Bakersfield, Ca. Benjamin Montoya (voice and rhythm guitar), Tyler Ochart (Lead Guitar), Adam Vargas (drums), and Alberto Torres (Bass) make up the fearsome foursome. Their sound is very 90’s alternative rock with a lot of edge. The vocals are honest, heartfelt and raw. The lead guitar adds to the dissonant rock feel lead by the vocals and accompanies Benjamin perfectly. The two seem to be  in disordinate harmony. The drums are heavy on symbols and slow rage and follow in the tradition of Dave Grohl. The bass is the back bone and keeps the whole rock fury held together with steady hits similar Interpol.  Some of my favorite tracks on the record where the whole band really shine are Rocketship, with it’s complex and interesting distorted guitar battles and intricate drumming, Live Fast on a more mellow and emotional note with a solid rock bass, drums, guitar and mournful vocal, and Paranoia for its sultry sorrow that holds hands with anger. The EP was recorded by Kris Holland at Rocketship Recording Studios. Listen below:

Naked Walrus: New Rock Music

Naked Walrus, a Los Angeles based indie rock band, has released a single called Aliens off of their upcoming album, “All In”. Due to come out March 11,2014. Aliens has a driving rock beat and an underlying feel of indie rock with its synth chords but also has an almost punk/metal feel at times with its rapid distorted guitar solos and fervent hard-hitting drum beats. The vocals are gritty and strong and have a sound all their own. During the chorus the guitar and vocals immolate each other and given the thrust of the vocals the two blend well. Each member of the four person group brings exactly the right amount of creativity and punch giving the band an overall brilliant and lively sound. You can download their new single for free right here!

Swami Lushbeard: Where the Sheep are Lead

Swami Lushbeard is a Los Angeles band offering lush rock music with an upbeat vibe. A group of friends had a desire to do some soul-searching through art and came together in an abandoned airplane mock-up facility to do just that. Through this creation they feature Rock music’s essentials, guitar, piano, tight rhythms, and robust lead vocals. This impressive combination is the work of Don Sprouls (Philadelphia) – All guitars & vocals & backing vocals, Andre Howie (Virginia) – Bass guitar & backing vocals, Matt Sachs (Chicago) – Piano, Synth, Keyboards, Ian Michaels (Chicago) – Drums , and Danny Kopel (Los Angeles) – Keys, Accordion & backing vocals. Currently Swami Lushbeard is hosting a free download on their site of their new song “Where the Sheep Are Lead”. The song is full of life and has a strong steady pulse through out. The recording is mixed well and all parts present themselves with clarity and conviction. The keys in this track switch between sweet synth sounds and piano. The strumming guitars are distorted and heavy. The song is reminiscent of Queens of the Stone Age with Dave Grohl at the drums. Download the track here.

Sprightly Moans: Demo’s III

Sprightly Moans is a band with a deliberate and focused rock sound. It is a duo consisting of Dave Wirth (guitar) and Jeff Olson (drums). Their music has a dirty electronic feel and the name Sprightly Moans expresses that sentiment nicely. Many garage rock artists seem to be heavily influenced by big name rock and rollers but this band has a unique and interesting feel. Too often bands turn to Metallica, Nirvana, ACDC, and Black Sabbath for a well to pull up ideas. Sprightly Moans doesn’t seem to do this. Their guitars are heavily distorted and their lyrics are emotive but they express this in a dedicated way that stays true to their own inner roots. Though they have influences in Fleetwood Mac, Christopher Parkening and others, their creative foundation is original all on its own. They have released many Demo’s respectively called Demo’s I, Demo’s II, and now they have just released Demo’s III. You can listen to it on their website here.
