Remember that Kimbra that I mentioned in the post about Gotye?

Well, for the past 3 days I have been stuck on repeat on Kimbra’s music channel. Her voice still gets me after the fourteenth replay. She’s from New Zealand. And she’s only 22 years old and she never thought about singing or even music at all until she was 12 when her dad bought her a guitar. But it was clear from the start that her voice has the power. Kimbra claims Nina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald as influences, and she absolutely brings back soul and Jazz, but does so while keeping the modern times in mind. Her bio and discography are tiny for someone of her caliber; her debut album, Vows, is her only full release, and she hasn’t even been to the US. In fact, she only signed with Warner bros. in June 2011. Lets hope that’s not the end of her. Her EP “Settle Down” is on iTunes and will be releasing in the US later in February.

Here is the video. I like this one because people are always so much more natural in the studio. She starts singing at 0:44.

  1. I love this post – Gosh i totally agree – she’s not famous in Britain but i wish her all the best – although it gets kind of annoying when you can’t prove to people that you’ve loved her since she started out 🙂
    But anyways AWESOME POST!!!
