David Francis Martin
-Spencer Thurlow

Yes, it’s evident that David Francis Martin has honed his technique and his image. Decked out in a pressed suit and tie for every show he plays, he calmly channels the influences of Jansch and Renbourn and others into his own kind of smoky soft power. I heard him at a house party in his hometown of Boston. I talked with him after and he said that over the years he has bounced around the country, living mainly in Memphis and Portland, OR. He plays in bands or by himself, and never sways far from the folk/blues line. He was a solo artist this time, aided only by his guitar and a rack of harmonicas. He launched his music career as a toddler, banging on pots and pans in the kitchen and moving on to teach himself guitar after hearing Bob Dylan’s self titled. He has been subtly working at it ever since, playing in hundreds of cafes and galleries across America. What a great musician find for a random house show.
