Who is Gotye??
-Spencer Thurlow

I had never heard of Gotye until I saw him next to Adele and LMFAO on the YouTube top 10. What? I know, right? It’s funny and really encouraging to know that an indie rock low budget guy with bad teeth can rack up 55 million views in a few days and sit next to Rihanna on the charts. He did it with his single “Somebody that I Used to Know.” Gotye (pronounced go-tee-yea) is Wotur de Becker, a Belgian born Australian who was created in 1980 and has been making music since 2001 and sort of living at his parent’s house in Melbourne. He made 50 copies of his first CD and filled in the covers with colored pencil and mailed them to every label in the phone book. Lo and behold, it worked, it just took 10 years to get there. For “Somebody that I Used to Know,” he collaborated with Kimbra, a 21-year-old singer from New Zealand who has a outrageous voice. Listen.
